Chiang Rai’s climate is noticeably cooler than anywhere else in Thailand. In particular, December and January can feel decidedly chilly, as Cold Season temperatures can drop to as low as 10ºC. A sharp contrast to the Hot Season of March – May, when daytime temperatures are usually 35ºC, with a modest 5 – 10 degree drop at night. Still, even in hot Season, it feels cooler than neighbouring Chiang Mai, and the rest of the country.

The Karen elephant camp at Baan Ruammit on the bank of the Mae Nam Kok (Kok River) is located 19 kilometres from Chiang Rai. Well worth a visit, its easily reached by either long-tail boat (recommended), car or motorcycle.
